I had, from the beginning of this project, an idea to draw some of the energy from within the Leisure Centre out into the public space. This is the result. It is intended to re-scale the space, to make it more fun and a better space to be in. There is both a musical energy in the work, and a stillness. We worked entirely with scale models and finally produced a 1:10 model (3 metres long) – to give to the fabricators. From this the pitch of the various spirals was calculated and the steel plate rolled. The easy flowing lines of ‘spring’ are a testament to the skill and commitment of JT Engineering – who built the work – all 5 tonnes of it!
